Powered by Nolo

WillMaker was built on Nolo’s revolutionary mission to bring the law to everyday people. Today, that same vision drives our team to meticulously update and improve the program, keeping simple and trusted estate planning accessible to everyone who needs it.

The History of WillMaker

From a Revolutionary Idea to America’s Most Trusted Estate Planning Software

In the early 1980s, the renegade lawyers at Nolo Press created the first do-it-yourself will program that became Quicken WillMaker & Trust. They believed—as we still do—that people with straightforward needs should be able to create their own estate plans without waiting for months or paying thousands of dollars.

Over the years, attorneys expanded WillMaker to include other essential documents, such as living trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, and transfer-on-death deeds.

Nolo’s editor-lawyers have continually updated these materials to reflect changing state laws and best practices, working alongside a development team focused on keeping the software reliable and easy to use. Many long-time Nolo lawyers and developers still guide these updates today.

The WillMaker team remains committed to making estate planning accessible to everyone, especially those who may not have access to traditional legal services.
